Solvent dyes from the violet hue range set yellow 62 to 90, orange 2 to 62, red 1 to 132, Blue 44 to 48, brown 43 to 48, black 5 violets 8 to 13 and green 3 to 7. Solvent dyes are brilliant dyes with good solubility in cellosolve and in many other solvents. Application of Solvent Dyes:

Solvent dyes are used for a great variety of purpose. The following principal uses are:

 

• Spirit and oil wood stains and varnishes.
• The coloration of Polymer.
• Transparent lacquers incorporating nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, vinyl, alkyd or other synthetic resin or shellac. These are used for many purposes including foil printing.
• Inks, for rotogravure and rubber stereo printing; for coating copying paper and typewriter ribbons, for ballpoint pen and printing inks as shading.
• In fats, oils, and waxes of all kinds of candles sealing waxes, and polishes and surface finish for a great variety of materials.
• For mass coloration of molding powder and other constructional materials of cellulose acetate.
• In the leather industry for the production of aniline and semi-aniline upper leathers and for spray finishing of dyed or undyed suede tannages.
• Some minor or specialized uses include the coloring of soap, cosmetics, petrol and other fuel oils.
• Coating of glass surfaces like bangles and light bulbs.

 

Fastness Properties: Except for solubility in organic solvents the properties required in solvent dyes are comparable to those required of coloring matter for other uses ie. appropriate hue and resistance, in the course of processing and in the colored article, to such agencies as water, alkalis, and acids, light, and heat

• Solvent dyes have very good lightfastness compared to another group of dyes. However, fastness also depends on nature of substrate used.
• Heat resistance of solvent dyes is good, this property depends a great deal on the nature of medium used as also the length of a test period.

Basic dyes is those dyes which in aqueous solution yield colored cations. This class of dyes is known as their brilliant hues, some of them being fluorescent. Unfortunately its brilliance is not matched by their fastness. Because of their poor fastness properties, particularly to light. manufacturers as well as suppliers of basic dyes, retained to small extent for dyeing where brightness is all important. Basic dyes yellow 2 to 40, orange 2, red 1 to 18, violet 1 to 16, blue 1 to 26, green 1 to 4, brown 1 to 4 ranges as per the specification and instructions of clients. Colorants liquid basic dyes are water soluble, but in most cases solution is facilitated by pasting the dye with acetic acid and water. Most dye baths require addition of acetic acid and it is often convenient to use part of this requirement for the above pasting process. Since solubility is not generally of high order, the availability of some dyes in liquid form is an additional aid to dye bath preparation.

Usage:

• Non-textile usage: Whilst the major usage of Basic dyes is on acrylic fibres, large weight of some of the older basic dyes are still produced for wide variety of non textiles usage some of which are followings
• Coloration of Paper: The paper industry uses large weights of the basic dyes mainly for dyeing papers made from unbleached and mechanical pulps and when light fastness is of the little consequence. High lining content pulps have high substantively for basic dyes, although this reduced on bleaching. The solubility of basic dyes is not great, and solution problems are minimized by many dyes being available in liquid form.
• Pigments: These are produced by co-precipitation with inorganic acid of high molecular weight.
• Solvent Dyes: The free bases are used as solvent dyes.
• Dyeing Of Leather: This is traditional usage of basic dyes but as on the natural fibres their dyeing have poor light fastness. Current usage is small and almost confined to topping of dyeing based on other faster dyes to give fuller hues.

 

Textiles Usage:

• Cotton: Basic dyes were formerly applied largely on a tannin mordant. Now this has been almost replaced by other classes of dye.
• Silk & Wool: Despite their poor fastness properties use of basic dyes continued on bast fibres as on economical means of coloration for long times.
• Acrylic Fibres: This is current major textiles usage of basic dyes. Selection of dyes for use in mixtures is important not only should they have similar dyeing rates but should not cause blocking affects.

 

Dyeing:

• Stir the dye with one-half the quantity of acetic acid required for dyeing, with sufficient water to give a smooth flowing paste. Add boiling water to effect solution. Set the dye bath at 40-50C with required acetic acid and sodium acetate (pH 4.5-5.0). Add the dissolved dyes in to the bath and run goods for 5 minutes at this temperature. Raise the temperature of the dye bath to 80-90C over a period of 20-30 minutes. Dye at this temperature for 35-30 minutes more. Raise to boil & dye for 1 hours according to depth of shade. Cool the bath slowly to 50C. Soap deep shades for 20 minutes at 60C. for 10 minutes.
